Open PhD position on music and motion in Oslo

Over the years we have built up an exciting research group (fourMs) here in Oslo, and we are happy to announce an open PhD position on music and body motion. The chosen candidate will be employed in the Department of Musicology and will work with the fourMs group, and will have full access to the fantastic lab facilities we have built up here over the last years (motion capture, multichannel sound, electronics, 3D-printing, robotics, etc....

Paper #2 at SMC 2012: Noise level in IR mocap systems

Yesterday I presented a paper on motiongrams at the Sound and Music Computing conference in Copenhagen. Today I will present the paper A study of the noise-level in two infrared marker-based motion capture systems. This is a quite nerdy, in-depth study of the noise-level of two of our motion capture systems. Abstract With musical applications in mind, this paper reports on the level of noise observed in two commercial infrared marker-based motion capture systems: one high-end (Qualisys) and one affordable (OptiTrack)....

Paper #1 at SMC 2012: Evaluation of motiongrams

Today I presented the paper Evaluating how different video features influence the visual quality of resultant motiongrams at the Sound and Music Computing conference in Copenhagen. Abstract Motiongrams are visual representations of human motion, generated from regular video recordings. This paper evaluates how different video features may influence the generated motiongram: inversion, colour, filtering, background, lighting, clothing, video size and compression. It is argued that the proposed motiongram implementation is capable of visualising the main motion features even with quite drastic changes in all of the above mentioned variables....

Record videos of sonification

I got a question the other day about how it is possible to record a sonifyed video file based on my sonification module for Jamoma for Max. I wrote about my first experiments with the sonifyer module here, and also published a paper at this year’s ACHI conference about the technique. It is quite straightforward to record a video file with the original video + audio using the jit.vcr object in Max....

Sound files from MA thesis

Edit: These files are now more easily accessible from my UiO page. While preparing a lecture for the PhD students at the Norwegian Academy of Music, I came across some of the sound files I created for my MA thesis on salience in (musical) sound perception. While the content of that thesis is now most interesting as a historical document, I had a good time listening to the sound examples again....

New application: New text file

This is quite certainly the least advanced computer software I have made publicly available (see here for others), but it may still be useful for some: a small application that will ask for a filename and create a new blank text file with that filename prepended by today’s date: If you are interested in trying this out, here are the files: New text file (app) New text file (source - Automator workflow) Over the last years I have become more and more vary of the problems of complex file formats, and find myself using plain text files for most things, including to-do lists and note taking....

Some pictures from NIME 2012

{style=“padding: 0; overflow: hidden; margin: 0; width: 500px;”} NIME 2012 was full of interesting presentations, posters, demos, installations, and concerts (including 4 papers from our group). I would have loved to write up a detailed report on everything I saw and heard, but just don’t have the time. Here are at least a selection of my photos, to give an impression of how it was:

Moog on Google

Probably by coincidence, but still a nice concurrence: on the last day of this year’s International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Google celebrates Robert Moog’s 78 year birthday. The interesting thing is that Google not only has a picture of a Moog synthesizer, but they also have an interactive model up and running, where it is possible to play on the keyboard and tweak the knobs....

Music ball paper at NIME 2012

Yesterday I wrote about the 4 papers I was involved in at this year’s NIME conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The one I was the first author on was entitled The music ball project: Concept, design, development, performance, and is mainly a historic write-up of the work I have been doing on developing different types of music balls over the years, including various handheld music balls, the Music Troll, Big Buoy and the ADHD ball....
