NIME panel at CHI

This week the huge ACM SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (also known as CHI) is organised in Paris. This is the largest conference in the field of human-computer interaction, and is also the conference at which the NIME conference series started. I will participate in a panel session called “Music, Technology, and Human-Computer Interaction” on Wednesday. This is a great opportunity to show musical HCI to the broader HCI community, and I am very much looking forwards to participating....

ImageSonifyer

Earlier this year, before I started as head of department, I was working on a non-realtime implementation of my sonomotiongram technique (a sonomotiongram is a sonic display of motion from a video recording, created by sonifying a motiongram). Now I finally found some time to wrap it up and make it available as an OSX application called ImageSonifyer. The Max patch is also available, for those that want to look at what is going on....

Are you jumping or bouncing?

One of the most satisfying things of being a researcher, is to see that ideas, theories, methods, software and other things that you come up with, are useful to others. Today I received the master’s thesis of Per Erik Walslag, titled Are you jumping or bouncing? A case-study of jumping and bouncing in classical ballet using the motiongram computer program, in which he has made excellent use of my motiongram technique and my VideoAnalysis software....

New Master Thesis 2: Music Kinection: Musical Sound and Motion in Interactive Systems

Yet another of my master students have graduated recently, and here is a link to his thesis: Even Bekkedal: Music Kinection : Musical Sound and Motion in Interactive Systems Even has carried out a so-called “practical” master thesis, with a more practical focus. He has carried out a mocap analysis of how people move while playing computer games with a Kinect device, and has also prototyped several mocap instruments....

Unofficial ERC Starting Grant LaTeX template

After I mentioned that I used LaTeX for an ERC Starting Grant application in a previous blog post, I have gotten several questions from people about what type of LaTeX template I used. Unfortunately, the ERC does not provide any LaTeX template, only templates for MS Word and OpenOffice. My scientific workflow is so dependent on LaTeX/BibTeX that I decided to recreate a LaTeX document setup that resembled the MS Word template....

KinectRecorder

I am currently working on a paper describing some further exploration of the sonifyer technique and module that I have previously published on. The new thing is that I am now using the inputs from a Kinect device as the source material for the sonification, which opens up for using also the depth in the image as an element in the process. To be able to create figures for the paper, I needed to record the input from a Kinect to a regular video file....

Dynamic logo at the Norwegian Academy of Music

The Norwegian Academy of Music launched their new web page and logo today. As part of the visual profile, they wanted to create a dynamic logo, continuously reflecting the activities at the school. I was asked to contribute to making this new dynamic logo dynamic, and we ended up basing the system on analysis of the sound of the school. The system I have developed is based on microphones in the canteen and the two concert halls....
